Point Clouds 3D Datasets (Geometric Coordinates X, Y, & Z)
Point Clouds are Datasets made up of Geometric Coordinates (X, Y, & Z) that represent 3D Objects/Surfaces. Point Clouds are a means of collating a large number of Single Spatial Measurements into a Dataset that can then represent a 3D Object or Surface. When Colour (RGB) Data/Information is present, the 3D Point Cloud becomes 4D.
Point Clouds are most commonly generated using 3D Laser Scanners & LiDAR (light Detection & Ranging) Technology. Here, each point represents a Single Laser Scan Measurement or Point. These Scans are then stitched together, creating a complete 3D Capture of a Scene, using a process called ‘Registration’.
